Hst/stis Uv Spectroscopy of Two Quiescent X-ray Novae: A0620-00 and Centaurus X-4
نویسندگان
چکیده
In 1998 we made UV spectroscopic observations with HST/STIS of A0620-00 and Cen X-4, which are two X-ray novae (aka soft X-ray transients). These binary systems are similar in all respects except that the former contains a black hole and the latter contains a neutron star. A UV spectrum (1700-3100Å) is presented for the quiescent state of each system in the context of previously published UV/optical and X-ray data. The non-stellar, continuum spectrum of black hole A0620-00 has a prominent UV/optical peak centered at ∼ 3500Å. In contrast the spectrum of neutron-star Cen X-4 lacks a peak and rises steadily with frequency over the entire UV/optical band. In the optical, the two systems are comparably luminous. However, black hole A0620-00 is ∼ 6 times less luminous at 1700Å, and ∼ 40 times less luminous in the X-ray band. The broadband spectrum of A0620-00 is discussed in terms of the advection-dominated accretion flow model. The X-ray Spectra of Black Hole X-ray Novae in Quiescence as Measured by Chandra
We present Chandra observations of black hole X-ray novae V404 Cyg, A0620–00, GRO J1655–40 and XTE J1550–564 in quiescence. Their quiescent spectra can be well fitted by a power-law model with number slope α∼ 2. While a coronal (Raymond-Smith) model is also a statistically acceptable representation of the spectra, the best fit temperatures of these models is ∼ 5 times higher than that seen in a...
متن کاملNew Evidence for Black Hole Event Horizons from Chandra
Previously we claimed that Black Hole X-ray Novae (BHXN) in quiescence are much less luminous than equivalent Neutron Star X-ray Novae (NSXN). This claim was based on the quiescent detection of a single short period BHXN (A0620–00, Porb=7.8 hrs) and two longer period BHXN (GRO J1655–40, Porb=62.9 hrs; V404 Cyg, Porb=155.3 hrs), along with sensitive upper limits. We announce the detection of two...
متن کاملFast Photometry of Quiescent Soft X-ray Transients with the Gemini-South Acquisition Camera
We present a compilation of high time-resolution photometric observations of quiescent soft X-ray transients obtained with the acquisition camera of Gemini-South. A0620– 00 was observed with a short cycle time and high precision. Superimposed on the ellipsoidal modulation we find several prominent flares together with weaker continual variability. The flares seen sample shorter timescale than t...
متن کاملNew Chandra/ HST-STIS results on Seyfert I AGN: Photoionized Outflows
We present soft X-ray results from observations with Chandra (HETGS) of the Seyfert I AGN NGC 4593 and Mrk 509. We discuss the photoionized outflows associated with Seyfert I AGN in terms of their absorption spectral signatures and discuss their kinematics, column density and ionization state. We discuss the link between UV and X-ray absorbers in Mrk 509 (which was simultaneously observed with ...
متن کاملA radio-emitting outflow in the quiescent state of A0620−00: implications for modelling low-luminosity black hole binaries
Deep observations with the Very Large Array of A0620–00, performed in 2005 August, resulted in the first detection of radio emission from a black hole binary at X-ray luminosities as low as 10 times the Eddington limit. The measured radio flux density, of 51± 7 μJy at 8.5 GHz, is the lowest reported for an X-ray binary system so far, and is interpreted in terms of partially self-absorbed synchr...
